The wall jump is skittish at best. The hit detection as to wether or not it will just do nothing against a wall or allow for the wall jump is, frankly, awful.
In fact in one particular instance I have only been able to do the wall jump once and never again: the area with the mine car jump just after you land you can jump up above the door way onto a ledge and then up on top of a rock platform. I was able to do this once and hence forth it refuses to let me catch the wall above the door.
This is rather frustrating and I know I am not the only one who has a problem with it as it is the FIRST complaint I have gotten about the game from my friends.
